The Ambassador
Nathalie Cely Suárez
Nathalie Cely is an economist who graduated from the Universidad Católica de Guayaquil in 1990. During her years of study, she received many important awards like the “Filantrópica in 1985, 1986 and 1987; and the award “Facultad de Economía” in 1987.
After her years at the university, Nathalie Cely, with a grant from the Inter-American Development Bank, went to Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government, to get her masters in Public Administration. She graduated with a diploma in Public and Social Politics. She had also received the “Edward Mason Award for Academic Contribution to the Community” in 2001. Working as a Research Associate for the Economic Development Center at Harvard, she conducted research as an assistant with internationally renowned professors. In the FLASCO, Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, she was a doctoral degree candidate from 2005-2008. Her doctoral thesis is the “Determinants of Collective Action in Generating Private and Public Property of Associative Networks”.
She had a solid professional and academic experience from 2002 to 2007. She was president of the foundation “Edúcate” and of the foundation “”Stratega”. Edúcate is an organization that works to better the quality of education through the measuring and the personalization of learning with the use of information and communication technology. In the foundation, Stratega, she directed the strategies and operations of the organization, which is dedicated to promote the development of sustainable business with the partnership and the innovation of small Ecuadorian businesses in a search for an equal and competitive Ecuador. Their amply trajectory and academic preparation has led them to be part of teams of consultants to Latin American and Caribbean governments and multilateral agencies on issues related to social policies. Cely is an author of various publications about economic related topics where her vision has become a thought leader on issues of economic development and the competitiveness of micro, small and medium businesses.
Nathalie Cely was the coordinating Minister of Social Development in between the period of March 2007-April 2009. During this time, she was put in charge to articulate politics of socio-economic inclusion: integrated training, technical assistance and to build opportunities for men and women to progress and to improve their quality of life. At the same time, she guaranteed rights for all and in particular, for those that are most vulnerable by creating assistance and generating minimum skills/competencies through the provision of education, health and quality housing for all. She also had the position of coordinating Minister of Production, Employment and Competitiveness until November of 2011. At the moment, she is the Ambassador of Ecuador to the United States.
