STATEMENT OF AMBASSADOR LUIS GALLEGOS ON 8-MONTH EXTENSION OF ANDEAN TRADE PREFERENCES

The government of Ecuador is pleased that the United States Congress has recognized the critical importance of the Andean Trade Preferences and Drug Eradication Act (ATPDEA) to our country and to the Andean region as a whole.

While we are disappointed that ATPDEA was not extended for the full two years and three months contained in the original legislation, we are relieved that commerce will continue to flow smoothly between our two countries for the next eight months.

We look forward to ongoing dialogue with our counterparts here in Washington to create a long-term economic framework for Ecuador-U.S. relations.
